HOSPICE CALEDON MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Hospice Caledon relies heavily on our volunteers. Our volunteers make it possible for us to provide support to our clients through our Visiting Volunteers, through our Day  Programs, Bereavement Programs, Office Administration and Fundraising events.  We couldn't do it without them.

In-Home Visiting Volunteers

Hospice Caledon's specially trained In-Home Volunteer Visitors provides in-home supportive care for individuals with life-limiting illness and for their families.In-Home Volunteer Visitors provide emotional, practical, social and spiritual support to people with life-limiting illness. They may also provide support and respite to the families and close caregivers of the people they visit.

"Home" for many of our clients may mean a house or apartment... but for others "home" may be a Long Term Care Facility.  Hospice Caledon is currently developing a program to assist local Long Term Care Facilities provide compassionate care to their residents who require palliative care.  We are looking for volunteers who feel that this may be a program they would be interested in.

Community Outreach

Hospice Caledon is expanding its community outreach activities. Volunteers are needed to assist us throughout the year with this mandate. Outreach volunteers attend events, providing the public with information about Hospice Caledon Programs and Services.  People with an interest in public speaking are encouraged to enquire about our Speakers’ Bureau.

Transportation
Drivers required for clients needing transportation to Day Program, medical appointments and clinic visits at area hospitals.

Day Program
Volunteers are needed to assist in the coordination and delivery of our Day Program. The Day Program is held every Wednesday.  Contact the office at 905 951-3534 for more information.

Volunteer Recruitment Drive:    

In preparation for the opening of Bethell House, Hospice Caledon is actively recruiting 150 new volunteers to support the day-day operations. Expanded training options begin February 2009 and will include weekday, evening and weekend formats.

Volunteers at Bethell House  will be required in a multitude of areas including:

  • Kitchen
  • Reception
  • Direct client support
  • Bereavement
  • Spiritual support
  • Children’s Room
  • Complementary Therapy
  • Housekeeping
  • Maintenance
  • Gardening/Landscaping

Visiting Volunteers

After a 30 hour training course mandated by the Hospice Association of Ontario, individuals qualify as hospice visiting volunteers. You can make yourself available when needed and as your own time permits. Good match-ups are important, so you will always have the opportunity to decline those situations which are not comfortable for you.

Expanded training options begin February 2009 and will include weekday, evening and weekend formats.

Process/training

All adults, male and female, can become volunteers.
What is required of our volunteers is:

  • a background check
  • a personal interview
  • valid drivers license
  • complete training course provided
  • final follow up/interview
  • minimum visit is 3 hrs. per week.

 

Trainees must attend BOTH week-ends. All efforts will be made to match volunteers with clients of similar interests and experience.For more information please call our Manager of Volunteers & Outrreach at 905-951-3534.
